When Jesus Speaks From the Fire: God’s Call Through the Angel of the Lord

🗓️ Week 2 – Monday (July 7)

When Jesus Speaks From the Fire: God’s Call Through the Angel of the Lord
(Based on Exodus 3:2–12)

You may have heard that the “Angel of the Lord” appeared to Moses in a burning bush. But did you know it wasn’t just an angel?

It was Jesus Himself — the divine messenger, the Word made flesh, speaking directly to a shepherd with a complicated past and a divine future.

🔥 More Than a Messenger

The term “angel” in the Bible doesn’t always mean a winged being. It literally means “messenger” (mal’akh in Hebrew). Sometimes it's a human. But in key moments, it's God Himself, stepping into our world with a message too big to delegate.

  • In Genesis 22, the Angel of the Lord stops Abraham.

  • In Judges 6, He commissions Gideon.

  • And here, in Exodus 3, He calls Moses from the fire.

“So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people… out of Egypt.” — Exodus 3:10 (NIV)

The voice from the flame wasn’t just for Moses. It was for a nation, and through Scripture, it’s also for us.

🧎‍♂️ “Who Am I?” — Moses’ Honest Response

Imagine hearing that you're the one God is sending to face Pharaoh — the ruler of the most powerful empire on earth. Moses didn’t puff up his chest. He shrunk back and asked:

“Who am I?”

That wasn’t doubt — it was humility.

And it’s precisely the posture God was looking for. Moses had once tried to save a Hebrew with his own strength (Exodus 2), and it failed. Now, decades later, God was calling him again — not because he was qualified, but because he was humbled.

God’s Assurance: “I Will Be With You”

God didn’t answer Moses’ question by listing his credentials. Instead, He promised His presence.

“I will be with you.” — Exodus 3:12

That’s the same promise He gives you today. You might feel unworthy or incapable, but God isn't interested in your résumé — He wants your willing heart.

💭 Reflect: Humility in the Fire

  • Why does God often call the unlikely to do the extraordinary?

  • How does humility make us more usable in God's hands?

  • What “burning bush” moments have you had — times when God showed up in a way you couldn’t ignore?

🧠 Spiritual Truth:

God doesn't call the qualified. He qualifies the called.
But He usually starts with the ones who say, “Who am I?”
