The Hebrew Midwives: Courage When It Counted

The Hebrew Midwives: Courage When It Counted

When evil rises, who stands up?

As we continue our journey through Exodus, we meet two unexpected heroes. Their names? Shiphrah and Puah. They weren’t warriors, prophets, or royalty. They were midwives—women who helped bring new life into the world.

And yet, these two women stood between Pharaoh’s evil plan and an entire generation of Hebrew boys.

“But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them…” (Exodus 1:17, NKJV)

🧍‍♀️🧍‍♀️ Two Women, One Bold Decision

Let’s step back a moment. Pharaoh—the king of Egypt—believed he was a god. His word was law. His rule, absolute. When he saw the Hebrew population growing, he became paranoid. His solution? Infanticide. Kill all the newborn Hebrew boys.

But Shiphrah and Puah refused.

They knew what Pharaoh was asking was wrong. They didn't need a seminary degree to know that preserving life honors the Creator. So, instead of obeying Pharaoh, they obeyed God.

And here's the remarkable twist: Pharaoh’s name isn't mentioned in this chapter. But the names of these two courageous midwives are. That’s how heaven sees things. Earthly power fades, but faithfulness is remembered.

🙏 When Doing Right Isn’t Easy

Let’s be real. Doing the right thing isn't always easy—or safe. The midwives risked their lives. Yet their story is a testimony: God honors those who honor Him.

He even blessed them with families of their own (Exodus 1:21), a special reward in a culture that deeply valued children.

Their story also reminds us of something sobering: Pharaoh’s next move was even more brutal. If the midwives wouldn’t help him, he commanded all Egyptians to throw Hebrew baby boys into the Nile. Evil doesn’t retreat easily.

But that makes obedience even more important.

🧭 What’s the Message for Us?

  • When culture pressures you to stay silent, will you still do what’s right?

  • When doing the godly thing is risky, will you choose faith over fear?

  • When no one is watching (except God), will you still stand?

You don’t have to be famous to be faithful.
You just have to say yes to God—even when it’s hard.
