“I Am Who I Am”: When God Tells You His Name

🗓️ Week 2 – Tuesday (July 8)

“I Am Who I Am”: When God Tells You His Name

(Based on Exodus 3:13–22)

When Moses asked God, “What is your name?”, he wasn’t just asking for a label — he was asking, “Who are You, really?”

That question still echoes in our hearts today.

🧭 God’s Name = God’s Nature

God replies with something profound:

“I Am Who I Am.” (Exodus 3:14)

In Hebrew, it’s “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh” — meaning “I will be who I will be” or “I am the One who is.” This isn’t a name like Steve or Sarah. This is a declaration:

  • I exist eternally.

  • I’m unchanging.

  • I’m present — always.

It’s not just about being — it’s about being with. That’s why God says, “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12). His name is a promise of presence.

🔥 From Distant Power to Personal Presence

The Israelites already knew God’s name as “Yahweh” (translated “LORD” in most Bibles), but they didn’t know its depth. They had heard of Elohim — the mighty Creator. They knew El Shaddai — God Almighty. But in Exodus, God is revealing something new:

“I’m not just powerful. I’m personal.”
“I’m not only sovereign. I’m near.”

That’s what Moses needed to know. That’s what we need to know too.

💬 Calling on His Name Means Knowing His Heart

Knowing God's name isn’t about having some divine password. It’s about knowing His character, His presence, His story — and being part of it.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.” — Joel 2:32 (NIV)

Calling on Yahweh means believing that He hears.
It means trusting His promises.
It means surrendering to His presence in your life, no matter how far into the “wilderness” you might be.

🙏 Have You Experienced Yahweh?

  • Has God ever shown up in a deeply personal way when you least expected it?

  • Have you seen Him not just as Lord of the universe but Friend of your soul?

If so, then you know what Moses learned that day at the bush:
God isn’t just “out there.” He is “I Am” — with you. Now. Always.

💡 Reflection Questions:

  • What does it mean to you personally that God says, “I will be with you”?

  • In what ways has God revealed His name through presence in your own story?
