What If Moses Had Said No? The Call That Changed History
🗓️ Week 2 – Friday (July 11)
What If Moses Had Said No? The Call That Changed History
(Reflections based on Exodus 3–4 and Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 251–256)
The burning bush wasn’t just a miracle — it was a crossroads.
Had Moses walked away, we might never have heard his name again. He could’ve lived out his life quietly in Midian, raising sheep and fading into obscurity.
But instead, he said yes. And the world was never the same.
“And the Angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush…” — Exodus 3:2, KJBPNV
🔥 The Call That Costs — and Changes Everything
Put yourself in Moses’ sandals:
-
He’d already fled Egypt once, for his life.
-
A whole new generation of Hebrews had grown up — who barely knew or trusted him.
-
The Pharaoh? Still powerful. Still dangerous.
And now, after 40 quiet years in the desert, God was calling him to go back — not to hide this time, but to confront.
His excuses felt reasonable. His fear? Justified.
But God wasn’t asking for comfort. He was asking for obedience.
📚 What Moses Would Have Missed
Moses’ yes didn’t just lead to deliverance for Israel. It shaped the Bible itself. According to Patriarchs and Prophets, Moses wrote the books of Genesis and Job during those desert years. Think about that:
-
The creation story
-
The fall
-
The flood
-
The first promise of salvation
-
The entire foundation of redemption history
Without Moses’ obedience, we may not have those stories written in the form we know and treasure today.
“In the beginning Elohim created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1, KJBPNV
A line written by a man who once begged God to send someone else.
💡 Discussion Reflections:
🟢 1. Small Faithfulness Before Big Assignments
Moses was faithful in Midian — a family man, shepherd, and student of God. That quiet obedience prepared him for the loud mission.
📖 Lesson: Your daily duties are often preparation for divine callings.
🟢 2. Are Our Excuses Reasonable?
Moses wasn’t being ridiculous: “Who am I?” “Why would they believe me?” “I can’t speak.”
These are real fears — but real fears must still bow to real faith.
God didn't choose Moses because he was qualified. He chose him because he was available.
📖 Lesson: God doesn’t need your ability — just your availability.
🟢 3. The Authority of Genesis Matters
Modern culture often tries to undermine the truth and authority of Genesis — especially chapters 1–11. If the beginning isn’t trustworthy, what else crumbles?
That’s why Moses’ work as a writer — under inspiration — is so critical. He wasn’t just Israel’s deliverer. He was humanity’s storyteller, preserving the truth about who we are, where we came from, and what God has done to save us.
📖 Lesson: Defend the foundation. Because without it, the rest of the gospel wobbles.
🙏 Personal Reflection: What’s Your Bush?
Maybe God has been calling you — not with fire, but with conviction.
Not with miracles, but with a quiet nudge that won’t go away.
What might you miss if you keep saying no?
Like Moses, you don’t need to have the answers. You just need to trust the One who is I AM.
