When Plans Collapse: Moses, Midian, and God’s Detour
Have you ever had a moment where everything changed in a single decision?
That was Moses. One act of justice — killing an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew — unraveled everything he thought his life would be.
The palace. The privilege. The possibility of a throne.
Gone overnight.
“When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled…” (Exodus 2:15, NKJV)
And just like that, Moses — once raised as Egyptian royalty — became a fugitive, wandering in the desert with nothing but regret and uncertainty.
🏃♂️ From Pharaoh’s Court to a Desert Well
Imagine going from being groomed for kingship to sitting by a well in a foreign land, completely alone.
That’s where we find Moses. He had tried to stand up for his people — but his timing, his method, and his heart still weren’t fully aligned with God’s.
Sometimes we take action with good intentions but poor timing. Moses wanted to help, but instead of liberating anyone, he ended up running for his life.
But here’s the grace: God can even use our failures to move us forward.
🔄 A Life in Three Acts
Moses’ 120 years are divided almost poetically:
-
40 years in Egypt — learning to be somebody
-
40 years in Midian — learning to be nobody
-
40 years in the wilderness — learning that God is everything
Midian was a divine reset. In obscurity, Moses would unlearn Egypt and begin to understand God.
🧭 What’s the Lesson for Us?
You may feel like your life has taken a sharp left turn. Maybe a choice you made — or one made against you — completely redirected your plans.
But as Romans 8:28 reminds us:
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
God doesn’t always cause the detours, but He certainly doesn’t waste them.
Moses’ failure didn’t cancel his calling — it prepared him for it.
And the same can be true for you.
