No More Excuses: How God Answers Our Resistance With Grace

No More Excuses: How God Answers Our Resistance With Grace
(Based on Exodus 4:1–17)
What do you do when God calls you — and you feel completely unqualified?
That was Moses at the burning bush. God had laid out the mission: Go to Egypt. Speak to Pharaoh. Lead My people out.
But Moses had something else to offer:
Excuses. Lots of them.
๐คท♂️ Excuse #1: “Who am I?”
Moses questioned his identity. “I’m a nobody.”
God’s response: “I will be with you.”
๐ค Excuse #2: “Who are You?”
Moses questioned God's authority. “What if they ask who sent me?”
God’s response: “Tell them I AM has sent you.”
❓ Excuse #3: “What if they don’t believe me?”
Now Moses doubts others. “What if they think I’m making this up?”
God gives him signs:
-
A staff turns into a snake.
-
A hand turns leprous — then healed.
-
Water turns to blood.
Still, Moses hesitates.
๐ฃ️ Excuse #4: “I’m not a good speaker.”
He finally says it: “I’m slow of speech and tongue.”
God answers:
“Who gave human beings their mouths?... Now go; I will help you speak.” (Exodus 4:11–12, NIV)
๐ ♂️ Excuse #5: “Please send someone else.”
Moses doesn’t even mask it anymore. He just says, “Please, not me.”
And this is where God gets angry — not because Moses has limitations, but because Moses is unwilling.
Still, God doesn’t give up on him.
He appoints Aaron, Moses’ brother, to help carry the load.
๐ง Grace Over Resistance
God didn’t dismiss Moses’ fears — He addressed every one with patience, power, and presence.
And He does the same with us.
Sometimes our excuses feel reasonable:
-
“I’m not ready.”
-
“I’m not gifted.”
-
“People won’t listen to me.”
-
“Someone else is better.”
But God isn’t calling you because you’re perfect — He’s calling you because you’re available.
✨ Reflection: Are You Offering Excuses or Obedience?
-
Which of Moses’ excuses feels most familiar to you right now?
-
What assignment might God be waiting for you to accept — even if you’re unsure of yourself?
-
Are you leaning into your limitations, or into God's promises?
๐ง Key Takeaway:
God will meet every excuse with grace — but He still expects a yes.
